Rico Lascano

Rico Lascano recaptures the essence of Zen aesthetics in his minimalist paintings, in which white plays a crucial part in setting the mood of calmness and quiet, allowing the mind to concentrate on a few important but subtly suggested elements. With a deft hand and a probing yet constantly refreshing eye, Rico has expertly translated the traditional Asian philosophical concepts of Zen satori and Daoist Wu Wei to fit into the Modernist vocabulary of gestural abstraction. Utilizing traditional aquarelle techniques such as wet-on-wet and dry brushing, Rico transforms abstraction into a mental process of meditative discovery and meaning-making in his subtle acrylic-on-paper works, conjuring an exercise of paradoxes between reality and nothingness, nature and artifice, and tradition as modernism that is at the root of Rico’s Contemporary Asian aesthetic.
